Still Life with Mic
Tuesday, April 3 at 8 pm
Still Life with Mic” is an ongoing exploration in the nature of contemporary performance, navigating between electrifying performances of recent new music works, structured improvisations, and spontaneous experiments in music, text and movement. It all comes together in a brave new performance format with as much debt to TV news magazines and web-browsing as to typical new music concerts. Violinist, and composer Todd Reynolds will premiere original works of his own, along with those of Michael Lowenstern, Preston Stahly, and Evan Ziporyn, in a fascinating combination of string, wind, percussion, electronic, theatrical and conducting techniques. With Reynolds as leader, the event will be an evening-length collage of solos and ensemble works featuring the extraordinary talents of artists, including Reynolds, leader, violin; Lowenstern, Ziporyn, clarinets; David Cossin, percussion; Leese Walker, actor, Indian flute player; and Christian Brandjes, actor.

American Moderns
Tuesday, April 10 at 8 pm
Over the past decades many distinct styles of contemporary music -- minimal, chromatic, new romantic, jazz, pop, new age, and so on -- have taken the stage. Weaving them together in a concert hall experience that draws as much from the spirit of Charles Ives as from pop culture, the NYAE has created a unique blend of style, personality and sound. Strad Magazine has praised them for their “charismatic understanding of space and silence; mesmerisingly interlaced melody; and consistently beautiful instrumentation.” Join composers Jared Beynon, Edmund Cionek, and Preston Stahly as they team up to present their unique musical expression with violinists Rolf Schulte and Todd Reynolds, cellist Dorothy Lawson (of Ethel), saxophonist Taimur Sullivan (of the Prism Quartet), pianists Margaret Kampmeier, and Marilyn Nonken, and The Accidentals a cappella vocal ensemble, in exciting premieres that include the NYAE 2000 national Young Composer Competition winner, David Vitale.

Rags to Rachmaninoff —
Connecting the Past and Present
Tuesday, April 17 at 8 pm
Tuesday, April 17 at 8 pm This concert forges an important link between 19th century Romanticism and contemporary American music as virtuoso pianist John Murphy, professor of piano at Loyola University in New Orleans, hailed by the Washington Post for his “brilliant solo performance,” plays the new rags of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom back to back with the Rachmaninoff Preludes—an illuminating comparison of style, technique, and expression from two masters of lyricism. “Music pours out of him!” said William Bolcom about John Murphy’s performances.

NYAE Visual Arts Initiative:
In addition to a champagne reception at each concert to enable the audience to meet the musicians, the NYAE will be launching its new Visual Arts Initiative, displaying the work of New York City artists, which includes the stunning black and white photography of Amos Chan, the abstract expressionism of Suzanne Hodges, the lush realism of Maceo Mitchell, the radiant primitivism of Spanish artist Federico C. Manzano, the sweeping color abstracts of Linda Touby, the nature-filled illustrations of Patricia Wynne, and captivating drawings of Susan Hunt Yule.

The Flea Theater
“The NY Times called The Flea Theater ‘the downtown gadfly of the conventional arts world,’ and we are thrilled to be presenting this Festival with them,” said composer Edmund Cionek, co-director of the New York Art Ensemble. “Our collaboration with The Flea sets the stage for some exciting new American music.”
“This is just the kind of musical event that we want to be doing,” says Jim Simpson of the Flea Theater. “The NYAE has taken up the ambitious challenge of presenting an incredible new music program, and we hope that everyone will be able to get a seat.”

“The purpose of this Festival...
"The purpose of this festival is to inject fresh energy into the downtown scene by presenting new music that is edgy, accessible, passionate, and American, from an incredible mix of composers and performers,” said Preston Stahly. "We want to plug our audience in to new American music and this is a great way to do it.”
